Skin is the largest organ in the human body. Naturally fresh and healthy skin is the protector of the body and a thing of beauty. Texts of Ayurveda recommend many herbs and natural remedies to protect our skin from acne, pimple, scars, marks, and wrinkles. These herbs and herbal remedies not only help in the above-mentioned conditions but also effective in other skin ailments like psoriasis, eczema, etc.
Structure of skin according to Ayurveda:
It is essential to know about the structure of the skin before analyzing the causes which make changes on the skin. Skin is made up of multiple layers of epithelial tissues. The microscopic section of the skin shows two distinct parts. The epidermis is the topmost layer. The upper layer of the epidermis contains dead cells which gradually cast off. These cells are gradually replaced by fresh new cells produced by the basal layer which is the lower layer of the epidermis.
The Dermis lies below the epidermis and consists of a network of collagen fibers which is responsible for the elastic properties of the skin. Sebaceous glands associated with hair follicles and sweat glands, are all present in the dermis and get blood supply from the subcutaneous tissue present below the dermis. Sebaceous glands get activated during puberty and produce an oil-like substance called sebum.
According to Ayurveda acharya Sushruta, the skin has seven layers. These layers when get affected by imbalanced three doshas (Vata dosha, Pitta dosha, and Kapha dosha) give rise to different skin diseases.
Herbs like tulsi, neem, saffron, turmeric, Yashtimadhu or Licorice, sandalwood, amla, etc help to keep the skin healthy and disease-free. Among these, the combination of Neem and Tulsi works wonders as it has wound healing, anti-inflammatory, and anti-microbial properties.
Importance of Neem and Tulsi Combination
Kapha blocks pores on the skin. This leads to the formation of acne and pimple. The tikta rasa of neem and katu, tikta rasa of tulsi help to reduce Kapha and unblock the pores. Tikta rasa acts as astringent and helps to close pores. Ushna veerya of tulsi cleanses the skin and the anti-micro-bacterial properties of these two help to prevent infection and formation of acne, pimples, and back acne. Neem Tulsi handmade soaps are the best bath solution when you have acne and pimple.
Tulsi for skin:
Tulsi helps in many skin disorders. Due to its Pungent taste (katu rasa) and Bitter taste (tikta rasa), it is effective in skin rashes, insect bites, and itching. Leaves of this plant are effectively used in ringworm infections and leucoderma. Paste and Juice of Tulsi leaves help to reduce acne, pimples, and scars. Tulsi tea is also an effective herbal drink that keeps skin healthy.
Tulsi is known to have anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties. This makes tulsi an ideal herb to ward of infections and keep skin clean. This herb acts as a blood purifier when consumed internally. It helps to expel body toxins and boost the immunity of the skin. Holy basil contains powerful anti-oxidants and helps to improve digestion and blood circulation. It acts as the best anti-aging herb.
